Walt Bulmer passed away early on the morning of November 29, 2021. He was elected to membership in the Washington Biologists’ Field Club in 1998 and served as Secretary and President of the Club. Walt regularly participated in work days and field outings on Plummers Island. We all enjoyed seeing him at WBFC outings and ASM meetings and catching up with him about mammal trapping and other field adventures. He will be remembered for the signature Schaefer beer he always brought with him to the WBFC events. He will be sincerely missed.
I knew Walt as a student at NVCC in Annandale. Another student and I drove from Annandale to South Carolina. The three of us were collecting samples of birds and insects. We were able to cram all the equipment in my 1975 Gremlin, (without AC). We camped in our tents while the alligators were nearby. I just missed seeing a gator eat a duck.
I went to NVCC 1972 1974 most fun I ever had in school and the most informative were the trips with Walt to Andros Island, Okefenokee swamp and the dismal swamp. Catching birds, mist nets stunning lizards with rubber bands, coral reef fishes. Total immersion in the environment, went to CSU in forestry. Always appreciated my time with him. He was fun to be around and always shared his knowledge. He knew the sounds of everything at night greatly impacted my life as I’m sure he affected all those he came in contact with thanks Walt.
